Copper diary 2008

Day six

Friday, November 28th.

The final day on hill at the Thanksgiving Camp at Copper.

Today we had a fantastic start with 5” of fresh snow.  The snow was fun to free ski in at the start of the day, and was a perfect warm up for out last day of slalom.

The group had a fantastic day of fun slalom on best training lane on lower Copperopolis.  The tall gate set and the stubbie set gave everyone a chance to continue to work on all the skills that they’ve learned.

The day was a cold one, with a constant flurry of snow throughout the whole day.  After 6-8 quality runs, the group had the last end of the day meeting before heading back to the lodge to pack.

A sad day….camp is over.

A happy day….is everyday at camp! (and NO-ONE had to visit the health center or hospital at all this week! -Lisa)

Happiness to all ski racers everywhere.

See you in Hood!

  Day five

Today was another spectacular day on the hill.  This was day 1 of slalom and it was incredibly successful.  We woke up to a dusting of snow and the first clouds of the trip.  After a late breakfast and the anticipation of one of the busiest days on the hill, we ventured out on the mountain to regain our familiarity with our slalom skis.  A few drill runs later, we were back to our slalom skiing form and ready to jump into stubbies and gates.  We had a great morning session on some moderate terrain before moving onto a serious pitch.  It was amazing to see the transition all of the athletes made from the morning to afternoon.

Today was a phenomenal day of training that will go down in the books as one of the most productive training days US Elite has seen.  From our youngest campers to our oldest, success and improvements were seen across the board.  We are down to the final day of training tomorrow!  The task of packing is looming in the background for tomorrow afternoon…and into the evening for some as they have piles of clothes to pack!

The camp celebrated Thanksgiving with a delicious banquet followed by the highly anticipated Awards Ceremony. Many parents of day campers joined us for dinner and to see the camp in action! Video analysis rounded off another busy but fun day at U.S. Elite Camp.

Day four

Today the team was treated to another blue-bird sky with temperatures in the mid 20’s.  The last day of GS was a good one for the entire camp.  Another double session day turned into a lot of quality runs on two of the best lanes at camp so far.  The first session was on lower Copperopolis which is a long and fun trail with a lot of roles and bumps.  The long GS was a favorite for most at camp.  The afternoon session was on Upper Copperopolis, and is another trail with a variety of terrain.  Lot’s of turns and lots of good work out of the entire camp!

The afternoon fitness was another famous yoga session (the headstand class) with Lisa or the 2nd round of intense Wallyball with Topher and Ken.  Dinner was an ‘eat-in’ style night in which was a fun ‘family dinner’ of sushi, pizza or BBQ chicken.

Slalom Thursday!

Happy Thanksgiving.

Day three

We enjoyed a great day of full gate GS training on Upper Copperoppolis today. With ten-plus runs of high quality GS it meant a lot of skiing for our campers - more than a whole weekend's worth for most athletes!

Some athletes even had the chance to watch World Cup #1 Lindsey Vonn who was training slalom alongside us.

After skiing, Topher, Ken and Hilary took the group for a jog stretch through the Village which brings to mind an early christmas with lights on trees and decorations. It's fun to run while 'window shopping'!

Dinner tonight was at Alpenista which is one of the best restaurants in Copper and we all enjoyed some great Italian food.

All rooms were spotlessly clean today so we'll see if everyone can keep it that way from now on. There'll be spot-check room inspections throughout the week and there is a BIG prize at stake so watch this space!

Another fantastic day all round.

Days one and two

We are in Copper!

First day on snow with amazing conditions right now and a great, hard surface to get back on skis - working on free skiing with slalom skis; slalom & GS turns.

We've put in so many runs as there are not many general public in the village yet, and all coaches agree that this is a phenomenal group of athletes and everyone is working hard.

Today we did free skiing drills using a course with brush gates.

Afternoon activities yesterday were a choice of yoga or walleyball and dinner was at the popular Mexican restaurant. A few athletes enjoyed a soak in the hot tub after dinner to soothe those first day aches.

Fortunately, no-one has suffered any real effects of altitude and all have been sleeping really well.

This afternoon there was a choice of yoga, which pretty much sold out, or swimming & pool games. In yoga we covered goals for skiing and incorporated them into some mental preparation for racing.

Chinese buffet tonight was followed by video analysis.
